The Shepherd's Fund aids Bishop in caring for his flock

In his role as a shepherd of God’s people, the Bishop is called to serve as the living presence of Jesus Christ, the supreme model of the good and faithful shepherd.

The Catholic Foundation of Central Florida invites the faithful to assist Bishop Noonan in the exercise of his sacred ministry by participating in The Shepherd’s Fund.

Launched in January, this new fund is intended to serve as a resource for special priorities and unexpected needs that are not covered through contributions to Our Catholic Appeal and have no other revenue source available.

“Significant challenges often arise when we least expect them. We cannot predict when or where they will occur, so the Church must always be ready to respond in the manner of Christ,” said Meghan Post, President of The Catholic Foundation.

One goal of The Shepherd’s Fund is to provide supplemental revenue for emergency expenses, enabling the Bishop to provide timely and appropriate care.

“We already know from history that a discretionary resource like The Shepherd’s Fund can mean the difference between works of mercy and lost opportunities,” continued Post.

The seed that would eventually become The Shepherd’s Fund was planted in 2008 when an anonymous donor gave the Diocese of Orlando a special gift to be distributed over five-years to worthy ministries, including those that may fall outside of the diocese. That gift’s legacy continues today through the work of Sacred Heart Catholic School in New Smyrna Beach, the Beta Center in Orlando, the Sisters of Divine Providence, and other ministries that further basic Christian values.

As the Church moves closer to Good Shepherd Sunday (May 11, 2014), the Foundation hopes that more Catholics will embrace this new giving opportunity. Those families who participated in the initial January rollout of The Shepherd’s Fund have already raised more than $26,000, with commitments for an additional $37,000 over the next three years.

Because the fund is not meant to cover the everyday work of the Bishop’s Office or the ministries of the Diocese, the Foundation also encourages families to make their gift to The Shepherd’s Fund in addition to their regular support for Our Catholic Appeal.
